A HOME FOR GLORIA. #mandeladay

Personal message

The 18th of July is Mandela Day - the birthday of the father of our nation, who spent 67 years of his life making the world a better place - and every year, we honour his legacy by spending 67 minutes of our time trying to do the same. People volunteer their time to various charities, arrange fundraisers, or get involved in whatever cause is closest to their hearts, and this is what is closest to mine: instead of

Gloria is an asylum seeker from Zimbabwe who came to South Africa 10 years ago in search of a better life for herself and her kids. A few years ago, she left her alcoholic husband to protect herself and her children, effectively becoming a single mother. Not long after this life-changing decision, her brother was stabbed to death and she took in his teenage daughter without a moment's hesitation, leaving her with four children to care for on a modest salary.

Gloria came into our lives shortly after the birth of our son, Felix, and has been caring for him and assisting in our home for the past 3 years. She is family, and I consider her to be one of my closest friends. In the past 3 years, I have watched Gloria battle a system that seems to be sided against her, in a country where she lives in constant fear. The only home she can afford to rent is in an unsafe area 2 hours out of town. She walks 45 min through a dangerous area (often in the pouring rain) to get to the train station. Not long ago, a man was stabbed to death for his phone, right in front of her. At one point, gang of four men tried to mug her, but luckily she managed to get away. Once she makes it to the station, the trains are almost always delayed, often because yet another train has been burned down. In transit, she (and her fellow commuters) are sitting ducks: the long delays make them vulnerable to muggings and violence and every minute of their commute is filled with fear.

A few months ago, her cousin's body was found in a car riddled with bullets. Two weeks ago, a 9-year-old girl in her area was raped and murdered and found with missing body parts (to be sold for making "muti"). Another 9-year-old was found tied up in the graveyard behind her house, luckily still alive. Her own son is 9 years old.

The house she rents is so badly built that - in the rainy season - the walls leak and they have to wade through ankle-deep water to move around the house during the coldest months of the year. She shares a 2-bedroom apartment with her 4 children.

Despite all of this, Gloria has the biggest smile and the most contagious laugh I've ever heard. She is a hero in my eyes, and she deserves so much better. For the past few months, we've been sending her for driving lessons in the hopes of improving her mobility. But despite the fact that affording a car would be completely out of her reach, even if she HAD one, this would immediately put her life at risk in the area she currently stays in. So, our current mission is to relocate her and her kids to a well-built house in a neighbourhood closer to the city.

We have exhausted the options that are within our power. But it’s 2019, and I have social capital in the shape of this Instagram page. So I'm asking for your help. Please support this cause by purchasing any of these options, or by simply making a donation here. If you give $1, that would be great, if you give $10, even better.

Sometimes bringing change into the world feels like an impossible task. So many people are in dire need of help, and it’s overwhelming. Where do we even begin? What do we change? I think about Nelson’s Mandela’s words, “It always seems impossible until it is done.” And when considering the immenseness of the task of help, of change, I am inclined to lean towards small, practical, sustainable, measurable actions. I guess that’s sort-of my thing :) And I know for certain that we can make a profound and significant change in this one person’s life. And in the lives of her children, and their children. A tiny act of kindness can snowball into something great.

As per Gloria's request, I will be putting the money into a savings account (with the highest possible interest rate), and will allocate the money from there. If we make enough to buy her a house (a girl can dream!), all the money will go towards that. If we make enough for a down payment on a house (where she could afford the monthly bond instalments), we will try to go that route. Otherwise, we will pay out a set amount towards her monthly rental budget so that she will be able to move to a more secure apartment/house. Hopefully the interest gained on the account will be enough to cover this, so that the money can be stretched for as long as possible. Smaller details like rental deposits, movers, furniture etc. will also hopefully be covered by this money.
