Personal message

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa (BGCSA) currently works with almost 2,000 kids in 7 Clubs across Johannesburg. We have excellent programs that directly lead to improving the life outcomes for our Club Members, they do well at school stay away from drugs and crime, and all have the ambition to be better South Africans that will help build our country.
We want to increase our reach and over the next 5 years increase our membership to 10,000 kids per year engaging in our programs. In order to do this, we need to find new ways to reach kids so we have decided to develop a test model - a Club Without Walls. These Clubs Without Walls will be based in High Schools and target Grades 9 -12 as we know these kids massively benefit from our programs and we believe we can help guide them to seek appropriate further education, develop skills for employment, or go out and set their own agenda as entrepreneurs.

Reaching our target will mean that we have 3 afterschool Clubs open from Monday to Friday working with 150 - 200 kids between the ages of 13 & 19 every day. This will also help us develop and formalize a model we can scale up to partner with 50 schools by the end of 2025.

Donated funds will be matched by a US funder that has been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as well as BGCSA for over a decade. The total amount of 250,000 will be used to purchase laptops, tablets, program materials, cover transportation and to cover the salary of one staff tasked to manage the project implementation on the ground.

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa operates facility-based after-school programs for school-aged young people. The Club offers a variety of activities in 5 different program areas designed to meet the interests and needs of members.

A Boys & Girls Club is more than just a place for kids to play and learn. It’s a safe haven that provides activities and experiences that enrich the lives of young people creating opportunities and expectations that teach valuable life skills to rely on throughout life.

The Club involves young boys and girls in programs and activities that build self-esteem and self-worth. They learn the values of responsibility and respect in a supportive environment free of pressure and stress. Clubs empower children to make wise and educated life choices. In this age of teen alcohol use, drugs, and violence, we work to help create model citizens and productive members of society.

BGCSA has three priority outcome areas for impact:

  • Academic Success
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Good Character & Citizenship

BGCSA has a variety of programs such as Power Hour (homework help), Smart Girls and Passport to Manhood, which is focused on life skills, and BGCSA Champion, which focuses on good character and behavior within our Club Members.
