Johannes the Newspaper Salesman

Johannes the Newspaper Salesman

Personal message

Many of us here have had at least one interaction with the always happy and smiling Johannes, the newspaper man under the Essexwold bridge, near St Andrews. He is there working, rain or shine, summer or winter, every day without fail. He greets us all like age-old friends and even gives the odd person a high-five on their way to work or school.

This morning we had our daily chat and he mentioned how he is seriously worried about how he will feed his kids over December and January. Mainly due to the schools closing, everyone going on leave and also because times are genuinely tough. He is getting no assistance from the newspaper publisher. He wasn’t asking for a hand-out, he was simply looking for advice and reassurance.

However, reassurance and advice doesn’t feed a family. So if I could ask everyone that drives past Johannes on a daily basis to just help him out in whatever way you can. He is not a beggar, he is simply a hard-working self-starter who is at a dead end. He brightens up our days, let’s try to do the same for him.

The purpose of this fundraising initiative is to assist Johannes and his family in having a Christmas that they will remember. The aim is to raise R50,000.00 over the next few weeks through community engagement on Basically Bedfordview and see if we can make a real difference in this kind-hearted man's life.

By reaching our target, we will be able to help out a poor gentleman who has been unable to catch a break in life. The money raised would help in feeding his children, ensure they also have all the tools they need for the next school year.

No cost will be incurred in the fundraising aspect of this initiative. All the funds generated will be given to Johannes in full, directly to his bank account.

Funds raised will be paid into the beneficiary's bank account.
