Strydom Trust has been supporting various causes since the last 18 years. Andries Hills is an disabled athlete whose cycling we have supported. He is a true survivor and his life story a miracle.
This remarkable young man, a former Meerhof School pupil, was diagnosed with a large brain tumour when he was only eight years old and given a two percent chance of survival. To add insult to injury, his father died in an accident soon after, causing his health to deteriorate even more.
Since then, two tumours have been removed from his brain; he has had numerous strokes, developed Muscular Dystrophy, an illness where muscular wasting causes the body to absorb its own mass, and Fibrosis in certain areas of the brain. Despite being terminally ill, he has lived long beyond medical expectation, and does not plan on dying in the near future.
Andries started cycling in 2010 when a physiotherapist told him it was the only exercise he should do. Andries joined the Matla A Bana Xtreme for Kids cycle tour and completed his first Cape Argus in 07:10. He is one of the heroes of the Xtreme for Kids Cycle tour (Johannesburg to Cape Town) where he runs the back up bus and entertain the children at the school stops.
Two months he was diagnosed with a brain tumor which cannot be operated on. He is now waiting for treatment at a cost of more than half a million.
We would like to help Andries by raising enough funds to cover the costs of his medical bills.
Andries is a true hero and he deserves to be treated like a hero - you can help us do that!
