Antonette Car Repair Cause

Personal message

I am Jonathan Horne and live in Midrand. The beneficiary is my girlfriend, a single mother of three who is in desperate need of car repairs and a break in general.

Antonette is a divorcee and now single mother of three kids. After the divorce her ex-husband stopped working and is now supported by his father. After several attempts through the courts it has proven impossible to claim child support until her ex-husband starts working again.

Her car is in a desperate state of disrepair after several "cheap" repair attempts and the latest, her bonnet opening on the freeway.  The costs of repairing the car are as follows:

Bonnet (already sourced from a scrapped car): R 850
Windscreen (already paid for, but using a loan): R 1,550
Alternator (already sourced from a scrapped car): R 1,500
Battery: R 1,200
Instrument cluster (already sourced from a scrapped car): R 2,000
Steering rack: R 1,200
Rear tires: R 1,100 for both
Throttle: R 1,300
Reverse light switch: R 200
Labour: R 4,000

Her battery has been damaged by a faulty alternator which is overcharging the battery. The terminals have also need damaged by the battery acid. This means that every few kilometers her car cuts out and she has to stop on the side of the road, regardless of time of day or night or location, and readjust the terminals to get the car going again. This as well as the tires are a safety hazard for her and three young kids, so the most obvious impact would be towards their safety.

Furthermore, her instrument cluster being on the fritz means that she has to guess how much petrol she has left. The odometer has also given up the ghost, so she has to estimate the distance she's done before guessing the remaining range. This leads to the risk of running out of petrol and burning out a second petrol pump (it has already been replaced once).

The bonnet cannot latch properly as it bent back when it flew open on the freeway, cracking the windscreen. In order to keep the car on the road she had to take out a loan to replace the windscreen, of which the first payment is due at the end of June. The bonnet doesn't latch properly at the moment, so it has to be tied down. This leads to additional delays when adjusting the battery terminals.

The throttle doesn't close properly, meaning that her car idles extremely high. This is causing excessive petrol usage.  The steering rack is currently on its way out and in need of replacement. Further wear will cause the car to be loose on the road, which is another major safely concern.  The reverse light switch was damaged during a cheap clutch replacement last year, and needs replacement.  Finally, the rear tires have a month or two left before they're finished, which both takes the car off the road and becomes yet another safety concern.

The donations will be going directly towards the parts and labour to repair the car. There are other things that need to be done, but nothing as urgent as the items listed.
