Ayakha's Climate Justice Appeal

Personal message

Ayakha Melithafa, a 17-year-old climate justice activist from Eerste Rivier in the Western Cape, South Africa is representing SA at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland from 19-24 January 2020 where she will share a stage with Greta Thunberg and 8 other youth activists from across the globe.  The theme for 2020 is: Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World

Ayakha represents a movement for change that is calling on world leaders to exercise political will towards ambitious climate change. This young woman has taken up the responsiblity we all have as citizens of our country, to 'do something'.  Her 'something' is standing up and speaking truth to power; inspiring and mobilising others to stand alongside her.  She is a young leader with an authentic voice that is developing into a powerful tool for social change. We, the people of South Africa, can stand alongside her and support her in her courageous journey.

Ayakha has launched this crowdfunding campaign to cover her, and her mom's, costs in getting to Davos. Her mom is attending as guardian, as Ayakha is a minor (she is 17 and a student in Grade 12 at the Centre for Science and Technology in Khayelitsha), and besides the airfare and hotels (which the WEF is providing), the peripheral costs are too high for the family to manage.

We are running out of time! Ayakha leaves for Davos on the 18th of January - in a few days time!

For Ayakha, Davos is an opportunity to bring the voices of the South African youth, who will be some of the most affected by climate breakdown, to the global climate crisis discussion. She also hopes to inspire social and climate activism in her community back home; put pressure on big emitters to stop blocking global climate action; exert pressure on South Africa to reduce its own emissions; and encourage South African leaders and policymakers to lead Africa is pushing the world towards ambitious climate action.

We appeal to friends, family, civil society organisations and champions of the climate crisis cause... let's help this powerful young lady take her message to the world!

More about Ayakha
Ayakha works as a recruitment official and spokesperson for the African Climate Alliance, a youth-led climate advocacy group that organised the #climatestrike protests in Cape Town in collaboration with more than a million youths around the world.  She is also a graduate of Project 90 by 2030’s YouLead Initiative and received her Bronze "President's Award for Youth Empowerment" at the end of 2019.

This fierce young woman has called for an immediate moratorium on the extraction of coal, oil and gas in South Africa and she recently made headlines when she joined Greta Thunberg and other teens from across the world in petitioning the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child to hold five of the world’s leading economic powers accountable for inaction on the climate crisis.

Kindly donate to Ayakha's Backabuddy fund and help her carry her message to world leaders in Davos.

My name is Natalie Geyser, a climate justice activist and communications specialist at Project 90 by 2030, a social and environmental justice organisation based in Cape Town. I have been a mentor to Ayakha Melithafa - a 17 youth activist from Khayelitsha - for the past year and in that time, been incredibly inspired by the passion that Ayakha has for her mother, her family, her community and her country.  I have recognised her special talent for speaking truth to power, and believe she is destined for a world stage with a powerful message.  I would like to do everything I can to support her on her journey.
