BLIND COUNCILLOR SWIMS FOR OLD AGE HOME IN THE CAPITAL CITY 2019 (COMPLETED)

BLIND COUNCILLOR SWIMS FOR OLD AGE HOME IN THE CAPITAL CITY 2019 (COMPLETED)

Personal message

I am preparing to compete in the Midmar Mile of 2019.

My name is Hentie Nortjé and I am living and working in the Capital City.  I am a blind long distance swimmer and am I preparing for my 19th consecutive Midmar Mile, which will take place on Saturday the 9th of February 2019 in KZN.  I am practicing as an attorney and am I furthermore a Councillor in the City of Tshwane Metro.

I swam for a number of schools and institutions in and around the Capital, over the last years, namely:

  1. Carel Du Toit Centre for children with hearing disabilities in 2013 (see: http://www.backabuddy.co.za/deaf-children2013thiscampaignisnowcomplete)
  2. Pathways-Pretoria School for multi disabled children in 2014 (see: http://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-man-swims-for-disabled-children-)
  3. Pula Difate Primary School in 2015 (see: http://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-man-swims-for-pula-difate-primary-school)
  4. Democratic Alliance in 2016 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-councillor-swims-16th-midmar-mile-fo2016)
  5. SA Guide Dogs Association in 2017 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-councillor-of-tshwane-swims-for-the)
  6. Harmonie Oord, a shelter for vulnerable people in 2018 (see: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/blind-councillor-swims-for-shelter-in-tshw)

I have lost my mother on 28 July 2018 at the age of 81.  She lived for the last 16 years of her life in a Retirement Village in Rustenburg in the North West Province.  She was not well since May 2017 and her medical condition deteriorated over a period of 15 months.  It was during this time that I came to realise that the senior citizens in our country are indeed vulnerable.

I have also learned that there are wonderful people at hospitals and Old Age Homes who really care and dedicate their lives to look after the elderly.  It is because of this reason that I have decided to raise funds for Residentia Sunnyside Old Age Home, by swimming my 19th consecutive Midmar Mile.  This is only a humble attempt from my side to improve the daily lives of the senior citizens of Residentia Sunnyside Old Age Home.  I trust that this effort will also inspire others to assist to improve the lives of our senior citizens in one way or another.

Residentia Sunnyside Logo

Founded in 1957 in Pretoria, South Africa, by the Reformed Church as the “Gereformeerde Stigting” (Reformed Foundation) and now known as Residentia, it has grown to a large organisation with 14 schemes countrywide.

Facilities include retirement resorts, old age homes, frail care centres, service centres, now also home base care, as well as a child centre and a seaside camp site for children.

Residentia is also involved with various community projects.

As a Christian service organisation, Residentia continually strives for service excellence in the provision of sustainable care for the elderly, the handicapped and the youth.

Residentia Sunnyside is one of the 14 schemes in South Africa.
