Personal message

We are raising funds for David Geyer, a 77-year-old Deafblind person living in Worcester, Western Cape. David worked at Innovation for the Blind’s cane department for many years but is now retired.

David is a student at the Innovation Resource Centre in Worcester. He started with training in 2009.

Deafblindness affects a person’s mobility, communication, access to information and participation in cultural affairs – many obstacles to overcome. David is completely deaf and blind and was very isolated. Technology such as assistive devices, however, opens a new world of knowledge to Deafblind people like David. A braille display, an assistive device used by Deafblind people, allows them to use a computer, browse the internet, use apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook, and read and write emails. As an excellent chess player, David also uses a braille display to play chess online against sighted chess players from all over the world. This indispensable assistive device thus allows David the opportunity to develop his communication skills and abilities.

Unfortunately, David’s braille display broke after many years of use and is thus cut off not only from society but also from contacting friends and loved ones independently.

We want to raise R30 000.00 to buy David a 14-cell Focus Blue Braille Display – please help us give David the opportunity to become part of the conversation again.

We thank you in advance for the support given.
