Food and Sanitiser for South Africa

Personal message

Covid-19 is now confirmed in the townships of South Africa and is threatening to bring our beautiful country to its knees. But our rainbow nation is strong and resilient, and right now we need to rally to help the millions who live in overcrowded conditions in informal settlement and shanty slum areas, who are suffering from hunger and cannot afford to buy sanitizer or soap, to protect themselves.

The Township Yogi Project is a registered NPO working on the ground in townships in South Africa, and has been helping people by supplying food and food parcels, and trying to curb the spread of the coronavirus in our township and slum communities through the distribution of medical grade sanitizer and soap to township and rural communities. Our team are always working with these communities, so can ensure direct distribution of food and sanitizer to the most vulnerable and the people who need it most.

The numbers of cases are rising quickly, the virus is spreading fast and our government has warned that it will ravage our country, which has a population disproportionately affected by HIV, TB and other infectious diseases. Our lockdown has helped to flatten the curve - but it is near to impossible to maintain in in South Africa's overcrowded townships and slums and is causing immense suffering for the people living there. Many have said they would rather take their chances with Covid-19 than watch their families starve to death.

South Africa has one of the highest TB burdens and over 13% of the population suffers from HIV or Aids. With such a large percentage of South Africans suffering from compromised immune and respiratory systems, their vulnerability in the face of the Coronavirus is staggering and immense.

Your sponsorship will enable us to get food and potential life-saving hand sanitizer and soaps into townships and shanty slums in South Africa, and to help the elderly, sick and the children living there, who are the most vulnerable right now. Please be assured that your donation will get to the right people through our dedicated teams who live and work within these communities.

Please support this critical initiative, and help us to make a difference and 'flatten the curve' in our beautiful country, where the spirit of Ubuntu - the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity - is always at the heart of our rainbow nation.

We at the Township Yogi Project send you all love, light and health at this challenging time.

The Township Yogi Project offers free yoga classes to people living in townships in South Africa, including children and the elderly, HIV/Aids and TB sufferers, and those who are victims of crime, violence and unemployment. We set up grassroots yoga studios, or find venues in the heart of township communities, and with the help of volunteer yoga teachers, we provide free and regular yoga classes to those living in townships who need it most. Township Yogi Project also empowers unemployed people in township communities, by training them to become qualified yoga teachers. As accredited yoga instructors, they then go back into their communities and teach yoga to patients in Aids hospices, recovering Whoonga addicts in drug rehab centres, children in schools, and the youth on the streets.
