Personal message

"This year is my 30th and final Comrades Race !    Help me raise funds for my 2 favourite charities - The Sports Trust and Children in the Wilderness, & stand a chance to win great Prizes !"

Bruce Fordyce will be running his 30th Comrades this year. Having missed silver by a few scant seconds last year Bruce is said to be determined to make amends in this year’s down run. This will be his last Comrades because he has indicated that he would like to focus on running well at the standard marathon and shorter distances as a 56 year old master. (If he is still alive and fit he has promised to return to run the 100th Comrades in a few years’ time!)

There are a few runners who have earned triple green numbers and indeed some who have run over 40 Comrades, but what makes Bruce’s 30th unique is that when he crosses the finish line he will have achieved the equivalent of 8 green numbers. (30 medals (3 green numbers) 11 gold medals (2 green numbers) and 9 wins (3x3 wins and therefore 3 more green numbers)

No one in the history of Comrades has ever achieved this.

To celebrate this landmark Bruce has decided to dedicate his run to two causes that are close to his heart.

The first is The Sports Trust of which Bruce was CEO for 7 years. The Sports Trust builds healthy communities through developing sport in previously disadvantaged communities by providing essential kit and equipment.

The other charity is Children in the Wilderness which provides life skills and environmental leadership programmes for rural children. These programmes teach children living alongside wilderness reserves about the importance of conservation and instils within them a passion for the environment, so that they become environmental leaders and future custodians of these wilderness areas.

Wilderness Safaris is offering a lucky draw prize of 2 nights for 2 people in their luxury tented camp at Pafuri in the Northern Kruger National Park. Anyone who wishes to donate can visit The Sports Trust Amabeadibeadi stand at the Comrades Expo in Durban or provide donations through the “BackaBuddy” site, The biggest donor will also receive a prize from Wilderness Safaris.
