My name is Cameron Van der Merwe, I am 16 years old, and I live in Jhb South Africa. My dream is to become a South African Swimmer. I have been chosen to swim for the elite senior and youth elite squad in Barcelona, Spain on 29 June 2019.
Ten years of trying to get here, the place I am right now. Swimming has always been the go to place when I am stressed. When I was little I had this love for water, the kind that you would think I was a fish because I loved being in water all the time. No matter the season, the time, I was always in love with the water.
I later started swimming lessons at a local swimming club. I went for my first lesson and I thought that I was and I quote: " I am for sure the fastest kid here.’’ I was so wrong. After my first lesson I could not wait to go back, I wanted to swim all the time and show everyone how good I was getting. One year down the line from not being able to swim at all to swimming every stroke, I was doing my first ever gala called SeaGulls. I was really nervous and it was my first time going down to the sea, so you can imagine how excited I was and how my parents dreaded going down to the beach and spending 5 hours at one go and not wanting to get out. I soon started racing and won my first level one gala in the 200m backstroke and I was so happy that I even jumped on my coach, he wasn’t expecting it though. The adrenaline that I felt from waiting for my name to be called and the excitement of winning has kept me in swimming for this long. And I just wanted to feel more energy and cheering like that more and more.
After swimming in the pool, I went into long distance swimming and I loved it. I was swimming open water swimming for about two years when I made my first Nationals. I swam the 3km for 14 and under and came 4th. I am now on my 4th year of making Nationals and on my Second year of making the SA Squad. My first year of making SA’s, I was chosen for the junior team with a bunch of other people. We did a 5km swim in Slovenia. We all raced the 5km on the first Saturday that we were there. It was such an amazing experience and very nerve wracking.
All the work that I have put in is paying off. On the 4th of June 2019 I received an invitation to the LEN Cup. It is one of the biggest open water competitions there is. It is one more step closer to getting to the Olympics.
You giving me the opportunity ,will make me eternally grateful and it will not only help me to pursue my dreams to getting to the Olympics but it will get me to where I’ve always wanted to go.
The SA team I got chosen for this year was to go to Barcelona, Spain. This is a massive opportunity for me and I would be so grateful for you to sponsor me to go there. The trip will cost R25 000. I know it is a lot of money and you would be giving it to someone you don’t even know. But all I want you to know is, is that I have worked hard for this and for me not to get the opportunity to go to such a big competition would be devastating. So I really hope that you will take this into consideration.
