Cancer Support in Xhosa

Personal message

Cancer Buddies is a non-profit organization which offers support, information and guidance to those affected by cancer. With our platform we pair individuals newly diagnosed with cancer, with survivors who have overcome this dreaded disease.

In South Africa, the vibrant Xhosa speaking community consists of over 8.3 million individuals nationwide, unfortunately most tools for cancer patients are currently only available in English and Afrikaans.

In the spirit of Ubuntu, we would like to honour the great legacy of Nelson Mandela by launching Cancer Buddies in Tata’s home language, Xhosa, in celebration of what would have been the year of his 100th Birthday.

With this campaign we hope to have raised R100 000 to launch a telephone line, social media platform and website in Xhosa!

All funds generated by this campaign will provide the following.

  1. Hire a retired oncology nurse, Marta Booi, to answer our Xhosa telephone line and provide our peer to peer support service in Xhosa.
  2. Develop and translate all Cancer Buddies content from English into Xhosa from social media our website and all other public expressions of our brand and service.
  3. Spread the word in Xhosa so that we can tell the Xhosa community in South Africa they now have a dedicated support line and service.
  4. Apportioned operating expenses to cover the life blood of the organization.

The weight of a cancer diagnosis, can transform an individual’s life indefinitely. Having a strong support system in place and ability to understand your condition can make a world of difference.

We would like to encourage all South Africans to empower us to better serve the Xhosa community.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart"

Cancer Buddies

Cancer Buddies Logo

Cancer Buddies is an organisation which offers support, information and guidance to those affected by cancer. It matches those newly diagnosed with cancer, to survivors who are trained to assist patients and their carers to deal with and heal through their cancer journey.

It offers this free peer to peer buddy support network where cancer patients can interact with, receive practical advice, information, guidance and support from cancer survivors who have walked a path through their own cancer journey.

We are looking for Cancer Buddy Champions who have been touched by cancer in some way to raise funds for their favorite Cancer Buddies Projects or to enable the Cancer Buddies team to deliver more support for South Africans affected and suffering from the raw reality of a cancer diagnosis.
