Personal message

I am contacting you about a student headed community outreach and research project that is being run with the UCT Department of Public Health and Health Promotion. In order to perform the study we require funding. During Ramadan (the Muslim fasting month which will be May-June) this year, we are planning a health promotion and research initiative during the evenings. Our focus is on collecting information on cardiovascular risk factors.

Our system of doing this involves 2 visits to each religious place of worship that is chosen, where different variables will be collected and where participants will gain feedback on blood tests that are done (primarily HbA1C).

The data attained will be used to assess the level of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus in the Western Cape. It will also provide data showing the correlation between physical signs and symptoms of diabetes with the blood results that prove the presence of diabetes. We hope to use the results to validate a screening tool that can be used in all levels of healthcare. This will enable early diagnosis and prevent progression of the disease to multisystem organs that could cause complications including blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, amputations and more.

In order to complete the research we require funding for the blood test products as well as all the equipment needed to run and maintain the project.
