Raising Charlotte

Personal message

Charlotte Mikella Phillips, born on 02 November 2019 to Vernesrey Phillips and Stephen Phillips, living in Edgemead Cape Town. Stephen and Vernesrey are good friends of ours.

Vernesrey and Stephen met as teenagers and fell instantly in love. After years of dating, they fell pregnant earlier this year, got engaged in September 2019, and married one another on 15 October 2019, one month before their daughter Charlotte Mikella was due to be born.

It was the happiest time of Vernesrey's life, marrying the love of her life and starting her own little family. Baby Charlotte then blessed them with her presence two weeks ahead of schedule and was born on 02 November 2019. Vernesrey and Stephen's happiness was bursting at the seams welcoming their baby girl. However, Vernesrey got an infection during/shortly after the birthing process and soon became septic.

After having three operations to try and get the sepsis under control and spending  three weeks in ICU, Vernesrey sadly succumbed to the infection and died as a result of heart failure on 03 December 2019, at 25 years of age.

Leaving her husband, Stephen, wifeless, and baby Charlotte motherless at four weeks old. This broke our hearts and we are still in disbelief that someone we know and love is not only gone, but that her young baby will have to grow up without a mother. The pain that we feel as Vernesrey's close friends is, however, nothing compared to what her husband feels as he now needs to raise their baby girl on his own, while dealing with his own grief at the loss of his loving wife.

Although having been preparing for baby Charlotte's arrival for the last couple of months, her father Stephen has now become a single parent with a single income. Vernesrey would have been at home for at least a couple of months to care for Charlotte. Stephen who works shifts has gained not only the expense of a newborn, but also the expense of paying someone to look after Charlotte while he works.

Stephen was fortunate enough to find Charlotte a daymother who is also available to care for Charlotte when Stephen works different shifts. This however comes at a cost that was certainly not planned for.

Our goal of this campaign is to raise funds that will assist Stephen in paying for Charlotte's daymother as well as assist with some of the other expenses that comes with raising a baby. We would like to give Charlotte a good start to life and to help our friend Stephen in any way that we can to support him as a single parent of this beautiful baby girl.

Charlotte's daymother fee is R3000 a month, and we would love to be able to raise enough funds to pay this for a year so that it's one less thing that Stephen has to see to. Any additional funds raised will go towards baby necessities and expenses.
