I'm a journalism graduate and a transgender woman.

I've been on and off about starting this particular fund due to the nature of making this information public, but as transgender people it is pertinent we are visible so trans youth can see positive representation in the media and find alternative sources to fund major milestones which are currently inaccessible via medical insurance.

As much as it is the final major step along with my transition, it is by far the part of my life I have been most uncomfortable with. From as young as 3 I knew that the body I was born in, was not mine. A cosmic mishap perhaps? Or a fluke in the spirit/body insertion at conception, who knows? But I vividly remember being uncomfortable being naked at bath time and having my siblings or parents around. Being naked has never been something I was comfortable being, and subconsciously it has altered the way I dress and how I move in spaces.

By far the biggest uncomfortably was the dangly bits. It's not a waning sense of being uncomfortable, it is constant. It's reminiscent of a mosquito buzzing, sometimes it close to your ear buzzing excruciating loud, sometimes it's further away but you can hear it, and other times you may not see it but it's there and you are fully aware of it. This is the case for me when it comes to my genital area.

Thanks to modern medicine, options are available to trans people to have their dysphoria alleviated with surgery/ In my case, gender-confirming surgery (GCS). I have been saving and working towards this goal since I started medically transitioning in 2017, however, the cost of the surgery is a financial burden I am unable to overcome on my own.

Thus, here I am. Just a girl, asking the world to help her. 

The surgery I intend to have is with either Dr Suporn or Dr Chettawut in Thailand, both experts in their field. The two have worked with many trans patients and are by far the best aesthetically and functionally in their results. The cost is significantly less than it would be elsewhere, and the surgeons in this country are somewhat inadequate re how many Gender Confirmation Surgeries they perform, and their technique.

The cost of the surgery itself is R350 000 rands, excluding travel, aftercare, hotel stay etc, which I intend to cover with funds raised here and with the bit I have personally saved.

I would absolutely love any form of support from those who can and are willing to give.

They say the spirit of community is alive in Africa, and from my own experience, it is because of my community, friends and family that I have achieved what I have today. It is for this reason, that I have looked to crowd-funding to assist.
