Hi, my name is Christiaan Haasbroek. For those who know me, you're aware that I spent most of my life working passionately in the Hospitality industry, dedicating over 14 hours a day to it, at various country clubs and resorts across the USA, South Africa, and Europe.
In June 2022, when the pandemic seemed to be receding and despite taking all necessary precautions like wearing masks and sanitizing, I contracted COVID-19. Unfortunately, my health issues began from there. Following COVID-19, I experienced recurrent chest infections that took a toll on my system.
In January, we received the wonderful news that my wife and I were expecting our first child. It was a great start to the year.
However, in February 2023, I faced yet another severe chest infection, the worst one to date. I ended up in the emergency room in the middle of the night because I could hardly breathe. After numerous tests and medications, I was sent home with antibiotics and a series of doctor's appointments.
In the first week of March 2023, I started developing rashes all over my legs, and my initial thought was that it was an allergic reaction to antibiotics. More tests followed, and I visited multiple doctors, which took a toll on me.
After numerous doctors, tests, and scans, I received the final diagnosis: PAN vasculitis with ANCA positivity. PAN vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that affects small and medium-sized blood vessels in the body. Essentially, it means that my immune system attacks these blood vessels, putting vital organs like the kidneys, heart, and brain at risk. Existing liver problems limit the aggressiveness of treatment.
The prescribed treatment is Rituximab, which costs €9095.14 for the initial doses, and subsequent treatments will be €8945.70 each. PAN vasculitis treatment is both extensive and expensive. With treatment, the disease can be managed, and we're hoping and praying for remission so that I can enjoy quality time with my wife and our soon-to-arrive son.
I'm not one to usually ask for help, but I find myself doing so now to manage a disease I never knew existed. Only 31 in a million people are diagnosed with PAN vasculitis.
Any funds raised beyond what's needed for treatment will be donated to the Vasculitis Foundation in the UK.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I'll continue to update as we navigate this journey of managing the disease.
May you all be blessed, and may you all stay healthy.
With love, Christiaan Haasbroek
