'Cleansing' Experimental Film Fundraiser

'Cleansing' Experimental Film Fundraiser

Personal message

We're a team of 3rd year filmmakers studying at AFDA Cape Town (The South African School of Motion Picture and Live Performance), producing our 10 minute experimental film titled 'Cleansing' under an examination closely monitored in all avenues by lecturers and industry professionals, approached with the utmost passion and consideration from each crew member.

Amidst the celebration of Women's History Month all throughout March, our concept celebrates and embraces the essence of woman and femininity in a contemporary era where social influence and expectation is so heavily placed on our bodies, even outside the context of gender or sex. 'Cleansing' offers a fresh objective lens through which to see and engage with our own sense of self and self-fulfillment outside of cultural and societal parameters, to allow a space to reflect on human dignity.

Under these experimental conditions, we are challenging ourselves to design and build our own set under the assured direction of our 3rd-year production designer. However, having considered other costs incurred, we have taken into account the projected needs of producing 'Cleansing', and our current fundraising activities will not cover the production's financial needs. Therefore we shall be sincerely grateful if you could spare a few minutes of your time by generously supporting us in producing this unique film and aid in the growth of our capabilities as filmmakers.

We’re looking forward to your donation.
Thank you.

A note on costs:

The film is experimental and set in a futuristic time with such a specific space, and we've therefore opted to build our set to have complete creative freedom in the world we've envisioned and are trying to create. As we are building in our campus cinematography studio, we need to accommodate for proper lighting as the studio itself has no overhead lighting, and we've concluded that two LED lighting panels, at R450 each, should be enough to provide this through the large windows to be built into the wall.

The Easy Rig, charged at R3 200, is necessary for the cinematographers to avoid shaky unclean shots and allow smooth camera in-hand tracking.

Pertaining to the Production design budget, we are as a crew trying to source as much as we can amongst ourselves to avoid costs, but specific set pieces are needed to communicate important aspects of the characters and narrative like bedroom and lounge tables, artworks and art pieces that reiterate our concept of femininity, contemporary wardrobes and shelves etc., in addition to paint and other materials for textures and building.

Because we are still in the process of managing rising costs as we discuss and finalise on key elements of production, the proposed target amount is the projected budget, as the breakdown of the production budget is, as advised by our production designer, not concluded. We'd also like to make room for the cost of 'boosting' the campaign on the Facebook and Instagram business platforms, which, at the cheapest rate of R10 a day over 15 days, costs R150 per respective platform to reach an optimistic potential peak of 4 300 people in total that our campaign will reach; the money we gain from this will be used to apply for submission at reputable International film festivals with entrance charges at roughly R250 per entry, to gain exposure and put ourselves on the market as South African filmmakers.

*Funds will go directly to Yolisa Letshwene, the producer*
