Coco's Inclusion in the Classroom

Coco's Inclusion in the Classroom

Personal message

My name is Liz Surmon, 47 years; Living in Paarl, Western Cape. The funds raised will be used for our daughter, Coco, who has Downs Syndrome. She is 9 years old.

Coco is currently in grade 1 in a Montessori primary school in Paarl. She needs individual facilitation within the inclusive environment of the school. To do this we have to make use of an external person as the school does not provide this service, on one teacher per class. We have identified a candidate for this position, but she will also need additional RLI training.

We want Coco to have an inclusive education, which benefits not only Coco but also other children who will be exposed to a child with different abilities.
We would like to raise the funds by the 1 November 2019, or as soon as possible.

Funds raised will be used as follows:

1. Monthly payment of the facilitator for the first year: R 48 000 (R4 000 per month)
2. RLI training Course for facilitator: R 2000
3. Training course handbook: R 1300
4. Apps to assist the facilitation: R R 1800
5. Tablet to be used for teaching via Apps: R 6500
6. Individual Education Plans and Assessments: R 2000

Total: R 61 600

This will enable Coco to catch up as best possible, in specific areas of development such as reading, speech and writing. It will mean that she can stay in the same school as her neurotypical twin sister.

*Where possible, funds raised will be transferred directly to the relevant organisation/supplier.*
