Personal message

Adventure and exploration have captivated the hearts and minds of humans for centuries. While there may not be many “un-explored” places left on planet earth, the drive to conquer and stand atop the world’s mountains still entices explorers young and old.

Many will know of The Seven Summits climb, which refers to the ultimate achievement in mountaineering – to reach the top of the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. More recently, the idea of the 9 Summits were born – referring to the highest peak in each of the nine provinces of South Africa. Not only were people now climbing the highest mountain in each of the nine provinces, but they were doing it in record times. The current team record for completing the 9 Summits in SA is 4 days, 18 hours and 38 minutes.

In July 2017, four South Africans will attempt to set a new team record for the fastest time to complete the 9 Summits in South Africa. The team will comprise of the following people of Adrian Saffy: (Attorney by profession, Adventure racer by nature), Alex Harris (Professional mountaineer, adventurer and Seven Summits climber), Sean Disney (Professional mountaineer, adventurer and Seven Summits climber), and Tian Liebenberg  (Amateur mountaineer, aspirational Seven Summits climber and passionate member of the Volunteers24 team at Media24).

Not only are the four climbers attempting to set a new team record, they also have an additional purpose. Their passion and focus can potentially provide an opportunity for learners to develop a relevant, specific, and crucial skillset.

“Great people doing great things in a great country” – Sean Disney

“I have been searching for an epic adventure that is challenging and tough and to take on the 9 Peaks record attempt with legendary men at a hostile time of year is just that. Doing it for a great cause is the cherry on top … salvation through suffering is what it boils down to” – Adrian Saffy

“Our country is one of the most beautiful places in the world. What better way to explore it, than with a purpose.” - Tian Liebenberg

“We have a country steeped in a rich and varied history, and with an incredible natural beauty to boot. Any reason to explore it is a no brainer. This is a great reason, and a great cause with an incredible bunch of guys. I cannot wait." – Alex Harris
