Funds for BRAVE

Personal message

Over the last few months, during the COVID-19 global pandemic, BRAVE has been able to continue our work with the 65 Junior Girls (ages 10-15) who are currently a part of our mentor-workshop program, through adapting our methods of communication and support.

BRAVE has provided weekly care packages of toiletries, food, cleaning supplies and warm clothing to the girls and their families. We have further kept in touch via WhatsApp and through drop-in visits at their homes. Their families have become staunch advocates of BRAVE, and have begun to value their own daughter’s role in their own homes as a result.

BRAVE’s Senior leaders, who work from an apartment in Sea Point, have led these girls in a storytelling project to ensure that their stories are not lost in the chaos of the COVID pandemic and that our support does not waver.

BRAVE has been committed to creating opportunities for young girls of colour since 2010.  These girls live on the frontlines of some of the most dangerous areas in the world; facing gang, gun, and sexual violence; unemployment; poverty; and inequality.  They continue to be confronted with the racism that was legislated and brutally enforced during Apartheid.

The painful experiences these young women have overcome form merely a part of their story, and we look forward to helping them write the rest of it. BRAVE celebrates these girls as the talented young leaders that they are.

With donations and support in the last few months, BRAVE has been able to:

  • Continue our weekly support and care packages to 65 Junior Girls and their families
  • Produce and create our first virtual BRAVE talk, featuring Zolani Mahola

             Link: https://youtu.be/EgTDmG8zfUs

Provide warm BRAVE jackets to our Junior Girls as they face winter

  • Create and implement a virtual storytelling platform that we hope we can roll out to other communities to reach other girls

We desperately need ongoing help:

  • With data costs, and simple smartphones so that we can remain in contact with our Junior Girls during times of lockdown and curfew
  • To safely transport girls to outdoor venues in order to continue our workshops, and continue providing weekly safe spaces to these girls (Once this is allowed by the government)
  • To fund our micro-adventures (organised with Escape+Explore)

At times like this, your help is critical to the ongoing operation of BRAVE.  While we appreciate your financial commitment, we are also grateful for your help in raising awareness about these incredible young women and your willingness to join them in creating a safer, more just world for all.  These girls' voices speak much louder than anything we can share.  We are constantly humbled by their courage, commitment and sisterhood.

We thank you so much for your help.

Warm wishes,

The BRAVE team

BRAVE

BRAVE Logo

BRAVE was founded ten years ago by three 10-year-old girls living in Manenberg, one of South Africa’s most dangerous, gang-ridden communities on the outskirts of Cape Town. These young girls decided that together, they wanted to create safer spaces for the girls in their community, to protect them from the rife gang violence and dangers of their community.

Since then, BRAVE has managed to expand and impact over 900 girls through after-school leadership workshops, holiday camps, micro-adventures, and road trips. We have been able to reach young girls in South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, the United States and thousands more through our outreach projects.

BRAVE is a girl-founded and girl-led organisation that uses the challenge of travel and adventure, experience, and storytelling to encourage leadership among the girls, inspiring and empowering them to be leaders. We stand with girls; we listen to, and amplify, their voices; we share their stories, and help these young women seek the joy and the value in their lives, despite the myriad challenges they face.

Not only is BRAVE building a sisterhood, but also a network of individuals from the media, travel, design and business industries to be a part of the FRIENDS OF BRAVE network. This network of individuals shares our commitment to create opportunities for these young women, to ensure they are allowed the opportunity to become their best selves and can create positive change in their communities and in our world.  BRAVE believes that girls matter, and in supporting them, we allow for positive change in their own lives, and in the lives of their community members and citizens of our country.
