Young mother of stillborn tragically diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND)

Personal message

My beautiful young sister, Daleen Dyer, has been diagnosed with MND a year ago.  She is 35, married to the love of her life and was overjoyed with the news at the start of 2017 of their long-awaited pregnancy.  She carried an easy full term pregnancy which ended in tragedy with the birth of her still born baby. Soon after this tragedy and loss, the first symptoms of MND made its appearance. She was officially diagnosed with this disease in April 2018, shattering our family with this dreaded diagnosis.

Sadly, this disease has had such a drastic impact over the last year, that Daleen has lost functionality of her body. She has only about 20% ability left in her left hand and fortunately can still speak, breathe and swallow. MND is a rapidly progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, wasting away all muscles in the body.

My wonderful, passionate and always full of joy previously pre-school teacher sister can no longer stand or move. She is totally home-bound, with only a domestic worker to care for her.  Her loving and caring husband has a fulltime job to keep the boat afloat and is trying his utmost best to fulfil their everyday needs. Her diagnosis has put extreme pressure on their finances and this is why I am starting this donation page for my sister.

Daleen has been living in total isolation in her house in Alberton since the start of the year and has not been able to leave the house at all. We are in desperate need of the following items and would appreciate every rand of donation towards my sister.

Funds raised will go towards the below:

Vitally urgent: R332 500
Electric Wheelchair - R30 000 (We no longer need this item thanks to the very kind donation of Stepping Stone Hospice)

Physiotherapy - R600 per day (aimed at getting x2 sessions per week which amounts to about R 4 800 per month

Medical Aid - R 4 500 per month (Patient has no income)
Wheelchair accessible vehicle - R 250 000 (She is home ridden and has no means at all of leaving the house. This has led to severe depression and isolation)

Not so urgent at the moment: R38 000
Other medical expenses such as nappies and medication - R7 000 per month
24/7 Medical carers - R25 000 per month per carer
Day-to-day expenses - R 5 000

Daleen is being looked after by Stepping Stone Hospice in Alberton, to read more about hospice or MND, please follow these links:
