Danie Break-in a Leg

Danie Break-in a Leg

Personal message

“The Strongest people are Not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about”

Danie's Story:

At the age of 10, Danie was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellites type I. The last 3 years saw many dramatic changes in his health (despite an active, healthy lifestyle), including the amputation of 4 toes, heart valve failure and Celiac disease.

First, a quadruple heart bypass and heart valve replacement, followed within 6 weeks by another toe amputation. Then a half foot amputation followed a few weeks later. Due to poor blood circulation to his lower extremities and an infection in the wound, he was put on a 10-day intravenous antibiotic course. However, the foot did not heal as hoped and the leg was amputated just below the knee on 29 January 2019 to prevent gangrene from setting in, risking infection of the new heart valve.

The year ahead has a similar bleakness as Danie’s healthier leg is showing similar symptoms of poor circulation. Since the botched toe amputation in December 2018, he has been living in agony. But still, as a true reflection of his strong character, Danie is determined to go on fighting the good fight.  The only reason he can do so is because of the love and support of his family, and his friends.

Neither Danie nor his family have the resources to get him the much-needed post-op rehabilitation, wound treatment and prosthetics so that he can continue to support them and contribute to society.

The funds will be split between 3 health care professionals: Physiotherapist, Krijt Nursing (wound care), Orthotics (preparation of leg + prosthetic limb).   The account will be managed by Tharina Calitz and Tanja Coetzee, who will keep accurate records of how the funds are used with the supporting invoices, which can be inspected when requested.

Please support Danie!
