Danie’s World Triathlon Championship

Personal message

Danie Retief has been selected to represent South Africa at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Championships, September 14-17, 2017 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Not only is this a great honour, but Danie wants to use his participation for a greater cause, by blessing the children of South Sudan through the SSNet & S4J.

The event consists of participation in a 1500 m swim, 40 km bicycle ride and 10 km run, which represents the Olympic distance. More information on the event is available at this link.

Danie is required to raise funds for all of his participation AND at the same time wants to raise funds to bless the children of South Sudan.

His letter of invite states: “There will be no team manager that will accompany this team and therefore no official team arrangements. All travel and accommodation arrangements all athletes are to arrange themselves. This event is self-funded by all athletes and the Triathlon South Africa office will enter athletes for the event and assist in the ordering of the official kit, once full payment has been received.”

Danie shares his heart with these words:

Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

No one become poor by giving", but instead you will be refreshed in spirit when you give.

As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), to spread the “Good News” as missionaries throughout the world.  Whether you are helping those in your own neighborhood or have traveled across the ocean to spread the Gospel, serving God is an experience that always brings you closer to Him

I have always loved sport and this has been my way of giving and building God kingdom on earth.

Matthew 28:19: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations”

One out of four people on earth have nobody to show them Jesus. How will they know if nobody shows them? It is our responsibility to tell those who have not yet heard (Matthew: 28v19).

Sudan (including South Sudan) is currently the 6th most persecuted in the world. They have by far the highest number of unreached people groups of any country in Africa. These regions have been greatly been affected by wars.

One of the main objectives of SSNet is to connect needs and resources for the Sudanese that are suffering severely. These include:

  • Providing relief to war victims
  • Support of humanitarian and development activities for poor and underprivileged
  • Christian education in a hostile environment
  • Help physically disabled people
  • Networking with agencies that share common goals
