Personal message
David is a young man (17yrs old) living with Down syndrome and autism who loves sports and loves to help others. This year David will be taking on his 9th Cape Town Cycle Tour with partner Brett. David can't ride a bicycle independently, so with Brett and their support team, he does it in a buggy attached to Brett's bicycle.
Brett and David have built a beautiful relationship over the years of cycling together, and not only does the cycling benefit David, who loves to be out on the road, but the two of them also use events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour (CTCT), to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts: Raising Hope South Africa.
Raising Hope South Africa is an NPO started in 2016 by David's older sister to support individuals and families living with disabilities through various projects such as food hampers, parents support groups, church ministry programs, and inclusive sports such as cycling and golf.
David likes to be able to help other children (and adults) who, like himself, face life with a few additional challenges.
The funds the team raises will go to the two projects closest to David's heart - the food hamper program, which ensures that families with children with disabilities have food to put on the table.
Children who come from families where parents are unemployed or only find casual work (some parents are unable to work because they need to be at home to care for their disabled children) will be able to have food on the table to sustain them and help them grow.
Funds will be used to purchase dried and tinned food items that makeup hampers distributed to families identified as needing support. One family food hamper costs R450 and supports the family for approximately one month.
Currently, the program supports 40 families at Paarl school for the physically disabled, and David is raising funds towards the hampers for the month-long June/July school holidays.
David wants to ensure that each family has food to put on the table.
