My Name is Denzel Swarts, I am 34 years of age. I am from a rural town called Koelenhof, Stellenbosch and now live in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.
Due to financial constraints in my family and the historical barriers of our country, my parents declined my request to study further. This was mainly due to not having funds to do so, but also a fear of seeking funding through their employment agency. It would have been a request too unusual.
Nevertheless, I accepted the situation and due to my drive for breaking through the generational poverty barriers, I embarked on various short courses to give me a slight advantage as a rural child to start competing in the Agricultural sector. Today, I have achieved some level of success and ever since, I’ve dedicated my time to keep on advocating for change and the advancement of rural farm children and workers.
I however realise that I need to also look at myself and cement my studies in order to further my knowledge and obtain a formal qualification. This action needs to be that of self-love and not just always be of unselfish love.
You can read more about what I do for my community via my Leadership Foundation I Established in 2016: www.sosfoundation.org.za or you can Google my name to read more articles written about be in the media space.
I have been accepted into the Post Graduate Diploma (PGDIP) in Management Practise studies at the University of Cape Town, Graduate School of Business.
As a non-graduate in my family and being the first to graduate I am very driven to achieve the highest level of success and in doing so breaking the cycle of generational educational poverty, building a legacy for my children and communicating to many other rural children that it's not impossible.
I need to reach my target by 30 January 2020. Funds raised will be used as follows:
- R10 000 - acceptance Fee (Part of Tuition Fees)
- R76 000 - tuition Fees
The donations will allow me to become the first graduate in my family, and also in my direct farming community. This will allow me to add more value to the lives of the rural farming community through the opportunities that my qualification will allow me to access.
