DUT Pepper Spray Drive #IWillNotBeNext

Personal message

My name is Lungile Ngcobo and I am 28 years old, I live in Pietermaritzburg. I am a student at the Durban University of Technology doing Masters in Finance and Information Management.

This campaign aims to assist students of the Durban University of Technology with Pepper Sprays because of the recent outbreak of GBV in South Africa. The biggest challenge of our institution is its geographical location of campuses that are too far apart and thus, require students to travel these distances which makes them susceptible to all kinds of violence.

Furthermore, the residences, particularly female residences, become the prime targets where most of these criminal activities take place. Furthermore, students carry gadgets with them all the time and they become targeted by criminals. Moreover, the university often hosts campaigns to address the issues of GBV but the victims can only do so much to defend them from the cruelty of the perpetrators.

By this campaign, we hope to at least save one girl from these acts of violence as the safety of students is never guaranteed. Students at DUT have encountered these criminals and had nothing to defend themselves with. One pepper spray can save a sister from adding to the statistics of rape, femicide, etc.

I am hoping to raise the funds by the 31 October 2019.

The target is 20 000 and we aim to buy 250 Pepper sprays at a cost of 80 each

Female students will be able to protect themselves from perpetrators

*The funds will be deposited in the Durban University of Technology account and the funds will then be used to buy pepper sprays.*

The #IWillNotBeNext movement aims to protect female students in Universities across South Africa.

Funds raised will be used to purchase and distribute units of pepper spray to women at the Universities who need to be protected from harm

A situation of danger could present itself at any time, and we find it necessary to do our part in making sure that every woman is prepared to defend themselves in a country that cannot protect us.

* Funds raised by this campaign will be transferred directly to the pepper spray supplier.
