Elnye Potgieter - Ollier Disease

Elnye Potgieter - Ollier Disease

Personal message

My name is Elnye Potgieter.  I am 7 years old living in Pretoria, Gauteng.  Born 26 January 2012 prematurely at 7 months I spent 3 weeks in the Neonatal ward and was discharged with a clean bill of health. My left leg started becoming noticeably shorter than the right and by the age of 14 months, I still did not walk. My parents took me to a paediatrician in 2013 that examined me and diagnosed me with Diaphyseal Aclasis and referred me to an Orthopedic Surgeon. I had broken my ankle multiple times in 2013 and in 2014 I received my first orthopaedic shoe, this, unfortunately, was not a permanent solution for me as my leg still grew at a slower rate.

2016 was going to be my year, my mom found a specialist who had successfully helped another girl with symptoms similar to mine. It was then that I was diagnosed with Ollier disease, a rare condition that affects 1 out of 100 000 people worldwide. My condition, however, was so severe that my leg had to be broken and rotated; all of this happened in a span of 5 months, I was 5 years old. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for my left foot and the decision was made to amputate it 7 February 2017.

I am now the proud owner of a pink prosthetic leg which helps me to function as a  normal 7-year-old child, I still have Ollier Disease in the remainder of my left leg and left Pelvic bone. More surgeries lie ahead for me with no estimated end date but the doctor indicated that I could live with Ollier disease until in my 30's.

My upcoming surgery is planned for the month of January 2020. To be able to walk and play with my friends and family I require multiple surgeries to remove the excess bone due to the disease. My sickness is an extremely severe case and these surgeries are expensive, I also constantly require adjustments to my prosthetic. Any donations will help me to achieve this and allow me to function to my fullest potential.

Due to the fact that we do not have a medical aid all medical expenses are carried by my husband and myself. Elnye requires funds for the upcoming surgery:
1. Dr Michelle Olivier Anaesthesiologist - R6 614.00
2. Life Groenkloof Hospital - R74 475.25(estimated)
3. Surgical Innovations - R9 807.51
4. Dr Denise Potgieter - R41 000.00(estimated)

These are the known expenses, but we also expect additional expenses for the aftercare.
