Temabeltu Special School is one of the few schools for children with disabilities in a township (Gugulethu). Flairs Gymnastics has been running a gymnastics program with over 50 of the scholars in the school for the past 3 years. This is one of the few programs for youth with disabilities in gymnastics in the country.
In 2016 a team from Tembaletu took part in the National Gymnastics Games as part of the Gym for Life Contest walking away with a silver medal. This was a life changing experience for these scholars, most of whom do not get the opportunity to take part in sport, never mind compete against able-bodied athletes and achieve a better result.
The Flairs program is headed up by Terrence Tshamlambo and Masixole Felani and takes the scholars through all the forms of gymnastics, and no limits are placed on the gymnasts, even though they have disabilities. The scholars look forward to their weekly gymnastics lessons, which also include a Winter and Summer Display, together with an annual Apparatus Testing. The apparatus that has been supplied to the school is also able to be used by the medical team at the school for rehab.
This project is one of the highlights for The Ukuphumelela Trust, as it really shows how sport can make a difference in the life of the youth in the townships. We are desperate to keep this project going to continue the wonderful work these coaches have done.
We truly believe Gymnastics is for everyone (taking the "dis" out of disabled). Please help us to keep this project alive.
