Support Food Security in Makers Valley

Support Food Security in Makers Valley

Personal message

The need is urgent - and we are ready to respond. Recipients have been identified. Now we need your support to sponsor food parcels and get them to those who most need them. Parcels will be purchased from and distributed by local Spaza shops using an electronic voucher system.

We are the Makers Valley Partnership (MVP), a not for profit organisation seeking funds to implement an innovative approach to food security in inner-city Johannesburg, South Africa. Our approach will provide much-needed support to local individuals and families while at the same time strengthening the local economy.

Your donation will contribute to the provision of food parcels for families and individuals in need. Our Community Workers have long-standing networks and relationships in the area and have identified the families most in need of support.

The system works like this: Each person in need receives an electronic voucher on their phone (no airtime or data needed). The voucher can be redeemed at the nearest participating Spaza shop for a food parcel. Parcel contents have been developed in conjunction with a nutritionist and participating spaza shop owners. Shop owners receive payment electronically for each parcel they distribute.

We are using cell phone technology and the local shops so there is no need to visit homes and no money changing hands. This model also prevents large crowds gathering at distribution points.

Please donate if you can and if you cannot donate at this time, please share this opportunity with others.

This project will provide food, sanitary and other basic supplies to people in urgent need both during the lockdown and also as it slowly eases. In addition, by using vouchers redeemable at local Spaza shops, we are utilising – rather than reinventing - existing distribution channels and strengthening the local economy for the future.

All donations will be used to fund food parcels for needy families. These parcels are purchased from and provided by local Spaza shops.

The Curriculum Development Project (CDP) is the fiscal sponsor for this initiative and will ensure funds are appropriately utilised and accounted for. To stay updated on our progress, please follow Makers Valley on Facebook and/or Instagram.

Curriculum Development Project (CDP) Trust

Curriculum Development Project (CDP) Trust Logo

The Curriculum Development Project Trust (CDP) was initiated in 1989 to design relevant, innovative and progressive teaching methodologies and curriculum for the creative arts in South Africa. The initiative drew upon the Khula Udweba (Draw as you grow - grow as you draw), course at FUNDA in Soweto in the 1980's.

The CDP aimed to address the lack of creative arts education and training, and the restrictive and ideologically skewed cultural practices imposed through apartheid's Department of Education and Training schooling). Since 1994, the CDP has served on numerous National and Provincial Curriculum policy development structures. We were members of a team that aimed to position Arts and Culture as a learning area within Curriculum Policy, which must be accessible to all schools.

We work with government education departments, provincial and national departments of arts and culture, to develop and implement schools projects to further embed relevant creative arts and culture in our educational system.
