In Loving Memory of Meghan

Personal message

A year ago, the day before Women’s day, I heard the disturbing news that my friend, Meghan Cremer, had been tragically murdered in Cape Town.

I met Meghan, in 2016 where we bonded over our love of riding and horses.

As our horses were stable neighbours, I was fortunate to see Meghan every day, either before or after riding. Our routine conversations soon developed into a meaningful friendship.

Meghan was the type of person who was always willing to help. Always the one to bring snacks to our riding club meetings. She would always stand up for animals being mistreated or unloved. She was a wonderful friend, business woman and animal lover. I miss her warm and generous personality and her quick, dry sense of humour.

For weeks and weeks after her death, whenever I parked outside her cottage, on the same property we kept our horses, I would look for her. And every time I would need to remind myself that she wasn’t there; it took a long time before that sunk in.

This Women's Day, a year since she passed on, I gathered the best way to honour my friend and her memory, is to protect other young women from the same fate.

With support from the public, I would like to raise funds to support the Justice Desk and their Mbokodo Club project that focuses to female empowerment, leadership, and teaches self-defence to survivors of gender-based violence. R60 000 will allow 60 young women to attend the Mbokodo Club project that focuses on offering female empowerment, leadership and self-defence workshops to girl survivors of gender-based violence and rape.

A woman is murdered every 3 hours in South Africa and only 1 in 9 rape cases are ever reported.

If I can improve one woman’s life, if I can help prevent anyone from the pain we all experienced when we lost Meghan, that will be enough.
