Fresh fruit is often taken for granted in homes with a reasonable income. In Smutsville, the township where we work, fruit does not normally form part of the children's diet. One of the founding principles of freshStart was to make a fruit for each child a fixture on a Recycle SwopShop market day. The children love this special fresh treat, be it apples, pears or oranges. The number of children who come to SwopShop is constantly growing – last year (2018) we had 7.294 children's visits! So the cost for fruit is a major part of our budget. R9 000 per year will enable us to continue this healthy tradition.
Thank you for your support! Every donation helps us to keep the children of Smutsville in fruit.

FRESHSTART SEDGEFIELD NPC
freshStart Sedgefield is a not for profit organisation on the Garden Route, South Africa that aims to create new possibilities for children and their families by giving them a hands-up instead of hand-outs. Our vision is to Help People Help Themselves.
Our main project is the Smutsville Recycle SwopShop. Every week, an average of 230 children exchange their collected recyclables for mula points and then trade these points for new and second hand goods (clothes, shoes, toiletries, stationery, sports equipment and toys).
In this loving and safe environment, children learn valuable life lessons. They are encouraged to save their points if they want to buy more expensive items like a bicycle or soccer ball. Those who save, earn monthly interest. The children learn the reward of achieving goals through effort and perseverance, thus helping themselves, growing self-confidence and self-respect. We also teach them to reduce and re-use. Promotions like Book Day, Winter Woollies, soft toy or stationery specials, and year-end bonus points, add excitement to our project.
The SwopShop has been up and running since 2014 and the number of children are increasing year by year. Accordingly, the amount of recyclable waste is increasing, too. In 2018, the children collected a total of 44 624 kg – refuse that would otherwise litter the streets of Smutsville.
We are registered as an NPO and a PBO and all activities are managed by a team of unpaid volunteers.
In order to keep our project going, we rely completely on donations. Every donation, no matter how big or small helps us to keep this project going!
