Personal message

I am currently doing my masters in sports science at Stellenbosch University focusing on disability sport, in children with amputations. I am testing the activity level and functional ability in children who have a unilateral trans-tibial amputation (one leg, below the knee). Some of the current prostheses these children are currently using are in a terrible condition which could therefore be affecting their activity level. After testing in their current prosthesis, each child will receive a brand new prosthesis, that is an active prosthesis that can be used for everyday activities as well as more active/sporting involvement. I was lucky enough to get these new active feet donated by Ossur South Africa, and therefore each child gets a new foot which they get to keep forever.

In order to get the data needed to see the difference in activity levels between the two feet, each of the 8 children have to be at every session (4 in total). This is often very difficult because transport is a big issue, as majority come from informal settlements and the testing happens on weekends so there is often no taxi's available. I would like to help with the transport of the children so they can make all my testing days to get the relevant data for the study in the hope to change the lives of other children with amputations.

By making sure all these children are able to attend this study, and getting positive results with regards to the active prosthesis, I hope to change the lives of future children who face the same issues. I want to use this money to help the parents of these children with transporting their children to and from school as they often do not attend school due to the far distances they have to walk, and being an amputee with a low standard prosthesis, this can sometimes be difficult. I hope to give each child's guardian a contribution to transportation costs to ensure that their child can attend school, the other portion of this money will be used for transport during the study and to make sure the children are able to attend each session.

Each parent/guardian (8 pax) will be given a donation of R1000 at the end of the study to help with the transportation of their child to school. The balance will be used during the testing period to ensure each child and their parent/guardian is able to attend each session in order to get complete data sets for the study.  This will give the parents a small amount of financial ease with regards to encouraging their child to go to school, as it becomes a burden on them to send their own child to school sometimes as a result to low income. It will also encourage each child/parent/guardian to attend every session, as an incentive at the end in order to get all the data and ultimately change the lives of many other child amputees.

My name is Gemma Haywood and I am currently doing my masters in sports science at Stellenbosch University focusing on disability sport, in children with amputations.

As part of the study, during which each child will receive a new prosthesis, each child will need to attend at least 4 physio, etc. sessions.  The children come from disadvantaged areas and transport is very expensive and difficult.  I would like to give each parent/guardian a donation of R1000 at the end of the study to help with the transportation of their child to school. The balance will be used during the testing period to ensure each child and their parent/guardian is able to attend each session in order to get complete data sets for the study.
