Graeme Pollock... Legend in Need

Personal message

Robert Graeme Pollock

“Perhaps the finest left-hand batsman the game has ever produced”

Donald Bradman certainly thought so, classing only Garry Sobers as his equal
among those he saw play. Limited to just 23 Tests because of South Africa’s
isolation, Pollock nonetheless showed in those matches what an awesome talent he possessed; his highest score of 274 was for many years the South African Test record. Pollock was an extremely powerful batsman, although his timing was perhaps his most obvious natural asset and could also bowl effective leg spin at times. He scored his maiden first-class century when he was just 16 and then posted his first Test hundred at 19 in Australia. The Pollock cricket dynasty also included his fast bowling brother, Peter and one the world’s greatest all-rounders, nephew Shaun.”

A Legend in need…
Covid-19 has had a profound impact on everyone’s lives and the resultant lockdown has significantly affected our livelihoods. Globally, the impact has been more severe on the elderly. One such person to bear the brunt of the pandemic is legendary cricketer, Graeme Pollock. Graeme turned 76 earlier this year and has suffered some health set-backs recently.

Pollock has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including being voted in 1999 as South Africa’s Cricketer of the 20th Century, one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1966, as well as being retrospectively selected in 2007 as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 1967 and 1969. In South Africa he was player of the year in 1961 and 1984, with special tributes in the S.A. Cricket annuals of 1977 and 1987. In 2009, Pollock was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

Graeme has moved into Evergreen Lifestyle Broadacres, in Fourways, Johannesburg and he needs assistance to cover his monthly expenses. Please help a legend…
