Helenvale Poets Writing France 2020

Helenvale Poets Writing France 2020

Personal message

Five young South African poets from an impoverished area of Port Elizabeth seek to go on a writing retreat to France set for 2020. They will write a poetry travel journal, capturing a trip to Paris and the French countryside. This will be published by the project. You can be part of this.

They will be guided by two establish poetry mentors, Brian Walter and Olwethu Mxoli, who will write with them, and guide their responses.

A busy young writing team, the Helenvale Poets have already put out 7 collections. All this in the face of adversity -- for Helenvale in Port Elizabeth is a tough area in which to live, to raise children, to grow up. Many good people try to make their way amidst the guns, the drugs and crime that is rife in Helenvale. Children growing up in Helenvale face many adversities.

The poetry group was formed to encourage the members in reflective creative writing, and to develop the skills associated with writing and publishing. The project encourages hope, reflection and skills development. It is designed to stimulate a dream.

The trip will be an immersion into the life of rural France, in the historic village of Féricy, with days spent in Paris, absorbing its people, art, culture and foods.

The trip will be captured in journals, in poems and pictures, which will form the basis of a post-trip publication, reflecting on the tough Helenvale community in which the poets live, on their visit and experiences, and what they bring home. Their poems will tell their story.

This page is the doorway, the enabling portal of fund-raising, into a new world for these Grade 9 and 10 children . . .

The Helenvale Poets form part of the Bay Creative Writing Development Project, under the Southern Africa Development, Research and Training Institue, a registered NPO.

Southern Africa Development, Research and Training Institute Logo

The Institute’s greatest strength is its ability to design and implement high impact programmes. With a holistic approach, complex problems are analysed and programmes are designed by integrating and synthesising the learning gained over decades by specialists with ‘hands-on’ experience. These programmes take into account historical successes and failures, the practicalities of current realities, and the future direction needed for success.

To date, the Institute has provided services in the following areas: poverty alleviation strategies, community facilitation and participation processes including memory and trauma healing, social compact processes, heritage policy development, skills development strategies, integrated youth development programmes, conflict management and violence prevention, integration of arts, culture and sports into social development programmes and integrated HIV/Aids programmes.  A detailed list of projects can be found on our website.
