Help Albert Save Lives

Personal message

I’m a human that’s passionate about emergency services in general, and emergency medical services in particular. I love helping people who need it, especially those who cannot access it easily. I work as a basic life support paramedic in Cape Town and I volunteer as often as I can with Hout Bay Volunteer Emergency Medical Services. I am also an active firefighter and crew leader for Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS).

I have been accepted into the Ambulance Emergency Assistant programme, a course that will upgrade my qualification to an intermediate life support level and something that I’ve been working towards for quite some time now. Apart from teaching an intensive theory component, the course will add some valuable skills and medicines to my scope of practice. It will allow me to better serve the people of Cape Town and, considering the worsening shortage of EMS staff nationally, the people of South Africa.

The four month course starts in January and costs close to R50 000. That’s an especially large amount of money for paramedics, who are not paid well in South Africa. On top of the course fees, I will have to cover all my other expenses for the duration of the course. These include accommodation and living expenses, transport to class and various locations during the practical phase (hospitals etc), and other miscellaneous costs.

Helping me is helping your community!

Visit houtbayems.org.za and vws.org.za for more information about the organisations I volunteer for.
