Help Ongama Study Masters in Opera

Personal message

My name is Ongama Mhlontlo, 23, and I am an Opera singer ( Tenor ) and Composer from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape South Africa. I completed my Bachelor of Music Degree in Opera at the University of Cape Town Opera School under the guidance of late singing teacher George Stevens and Sidwill Hartman.

Although not registered as a composition student, my compositions caught the ear of South African Composer Dr Martin Watt who encouraged me to continue writing as you don’t need a composition degree to be a composer.

Since enrolling at the University of Cape Town’s Opera School, I have performed in various UCT-Cape Town Opera collaborations. In 2016 I was selected to perform at the 2016 Western Cape Youth Music Festival with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. I also won First prize at the Grahamstown National Music Competition in 2016. I have performed the roles of both of Pastore 1 and Spirit 1 from the opera Orfeo, Tito from Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, the Second Priest from Magic Flute and Norman from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti.

As a Composer, I premiered my first song cycle titled ‘Coldest Winter’ at the Baxter Theatre, Cape Town in 2018 to critical success. Following in 2017, I dedicated the piece ‘Hope' to all those affected by the Knysna Fires. This year I premiered  ‘I Remember’ at UCT’S George Stevens Memorial concert. I am also the founder and host of The Class of Opera Youtube Channel. The channel aims to promote upcoming opera singers.

I will be joining the Manhattan School of Music officially in September 2019. The school has awarded me a scholarship of $35 000 that only covers half of tuition and living expenses, so I am still very short from covering the full expense of my fees. Hence I am pleading for financial assistance.

I have always intended to further my studies in New York at the Manhattan School of music. This is because the school is one of the best music conservatories in the world and enrolling in their master’s program will prepare me for a successful life as an international singer. I will also be taking piano and composition lessons so as to compliment my other artistic skills. The Manhattan School of Music is also the music conservatory from which the late South African Jazz Legend Hugh Masekela graduated from when he was in America so really the sky is the limit!

After I complete my masters program in New York, I plan to work as an international opera singer and composer who is based in South Africa. This is because I believe that South Africa is the best country in the world hence it has the best stories. My goal as a South African Artist is to share our stories with the rest of the world. Thank you so much for making this dream closer and ever more possible. I have always been passionate about music and your help is really really much appreciated.
