Support Our PPE Drive To Keep Our Staff And Patients Safe

Personal message

PLAY YOUR PART IN THE WAR AGAINST COVID-19 – SUPPORT OUR PPE DRIVE TO KEEP OUR STAFF AND PATIENTS SAFE

Thank you to all who have so generously supported Witkoppen’ s fundraising drive to purchase PPE for our Clinic staff and to get our clinic ready for the required safety protocols.  In April, we screened 5 700 patients and conducted over 80 tests at the clinic in Fourways. In the last week of April, Witkoppen Clinic screened 23 000 people in the community and referred 100 for COVID testing.

This was made possible with your help.

We also want to give our patients masks and sanitiser and where we can, blankets and food parcels and so would welcome your help here.

Our patients come from the desperately poor, informal settlements in the North of Johannesburg and are frightened, hungry and angry. They cannot afford to buy PPE.

Please tell your friends and family about Witkoppen Clinic.

Our next fundraising drive is geared to raising funds to pay for a doctor, psychologist, 4 nurses and a counsellor.  They are the glue in our fight against covid-19. They bravely hold the line to keep us safe. If you would like to support our staff, please follow this link.

Why we need your support in the time of COVID-19

There is no general hospital in the north of Johannesburg which is where Witkoppen Clinic fills the gap, providing medical and social services to the informal settlements of region A. This is home to 1.4million people, some of whom are the poorest of poor with limited resources such as running water, sanitation and electricity. Overcrowding, poverty, hunger and increasing anger are daily realities.

The community is at risk if COVID-19 reaches it. A large portion of the community is living with HIV with only 48% of HIV Aids positive individuals on treatment. Many others have severely compromised immune systems due to malnutrition, hypertension and diabetes.

The knock-on effect on the greater Johannesburg area is huge as many of these individuals work as domestic workers, gardeners, cashiers at supermarkets and stores and petrol attendants across the rest of Johannesburg.

Witkoppen Clinic is a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), contributions enjoy section 18 Tax-exempt status.

Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre

Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre Logo

Witkoppen Health and Welfare Witkoppen Clinic is a comprehensive primary healthcare clinic with social welfare services situated in the far northern suburbs of Johannesburg and also providing community outreach services to informal settlements such as Diepsloot. It is a well-established NPO which started in 1946 and has specialized in responding to the multiple medical, social and psychological needs of these marginalized vulnerable populations. Our coverage is 1,4 million people who mostly live in overcrowded shacks of 4-6 people sharing 1 or maybe 2 rooms with no windows for ventilation with no running water, outside or communal latrines and no electricity. Unemployment exceeded 30% and would have worsened as a result of lockdown, food is scarce and the migrant population exceeds 35% as foreigners flock to the “city of gold” for employment opportunities.

At our clinic facility, Witkoppen offers acute, curative and chronic disease management services which include: antenatal services, post-natal care and immunization, family planning and well-women services, HIV and TB care and treatment, nutritional advice and supplementation, mental health services, dental services, poverty alleviation with food distribution, statutory crisis intervention to protect children and an in-house pharmacy. Our community-based interventions include an orphan and vulnerable children’s project and HIV counselling and testing and TB screening project. Our multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, a dietician, pharmacists and counsellors. HIV counselling and testing services and TB symptom screening are routine within all medical service entry points.  We directly impact the lives of more than 100 000 people annually.
