Henri Pienaar sadly passed away yesterday, 13th June at 3pm. Henri leaves behind Monica, and five children Tiaan (21), Cherise (19), Dominique (13), Semé and Lienka. It was also Dominique’s birthday yesterday.
The family thanks you for the support that has been given during this difficult time.
My name is Pine Pienaar, and I’m known as Bertie by close family members. Henri is my brother. I’m reaching out to people who can and are willing to contribute to this fundraiser to get Henri the urgent specialist medical attention he needs, possibly to save his life.
On Monday 27 May Henri was involved in a horrible accident on his way to work. Apparently, his motorcycle was hit from behind by a taxi traveling in the same direction, and he got flung over the guardrail and down a high embankment.
He sustained some serious injuries, including a leg broken in the hip, leg shattered below the knee, suspected internal bleeding, injured neck and face, bruised collar bone, some broken ribs. Unfortunately, Henri’s family does not have medical insurance. Henri was admitted to a state hospital near Durban. The hospital is reportedly clean and staff as friendly, but the staff is apparently overworked, and resources hopelessly inadequate.
His road to recovery did not start well. Blood circulation was restricted for almost 24-hours before he got allocated a bed. Initial concerns were with his leg only. During the past week, we witnessed how the condition has been rapidly deteriorating, to the point where we are now fearing for his life. The untreated internal bleeding is now our major concern. He has been vomited blood and yellow stuff since Tuesday and new his fever is increasing, probably indicating internal infection. We feel extremely helpless as no-one in our family has the kind of funds needed to get Henri admitted to a facility that can provide the URGENT medical care that Henri needs.
We believe Henri needs to get to a medical facility very urgently as the stable situation has now turned to life-threatening. People with medical backgrounds say that Henri’s swollen and painful abdomen is indicative if internal injuries with fluids leaking into his intestines. If left untreated it could lead to some very serious life-threading complications. This is VERY urgent.
An exact figure is difficult to specify. Monica (Henri’s wife) has been getting quotes. The immediate funds required is going to be around R25k for the ambulance to transfer Henri, and R60k to admit him to a medical facility that can treat Henri.
I’m no doctor, but I foresee these immediate steps: blood, drip with antibiotics, blood tests to determine the cause of the infection, proper scan to assess the extent of his internal injuries and a plan to address these.
Monica was told that the hospital wants another R250k secured before they would operate on Henri.
We’ve been supporting Monica the best we can, but this is a huge amount of money we can’t raise by ourselves!
Henri was transferred to Durban from Witbank. They battled to sell their house in Witbank and were forced to rent it. Unfortunately, the renters destroyed their property and disappeared. This placed them in financial difficulty.
This accident is just aggravating their situation. Henri is the only breadwinner. He is a loving husband and a caring father for their five kids.
He just has to pull through or be pulled through this challenge. The funds we need will provide him access to the specialist medical care that he needs.
You can read about the accident here.
*Funds raised will be transferred directly to the hospital and medical service providers - the remaining funds will be paid out to Henri's wife, Monica, to cover his daily needs.*
