At the age of 18, I was challenged by the late Kenneth Minnaar, then chairperson of WPNBBU, to ‘lift some weights’ on various visits to the previous Athlone Technical College Gym. I very soon became captivated by the transformation that strength/resistance training brought to my unhealthy overweight physique, there was no turning back. I fell in love with the sport of body building.
Growing up in the disadvantaged township of Manenberg, I realised that I have to motivate myself in the hope of achieving anything in life and hence, I embraced body building as a sport.
Unfortunately, for many years my shy nature and low self-esteem prevented me from stepping onto a stage and thus taking my sport to the next level.
At age 43, I took the leap and achieved excellent results after months of hard work and following very disciplined eating habits.
The greatest challenge for individual sport is funding, especially in a low profile sport such as body building. Therefore, I would like to ask for your kind consideration to assist in funding where I will be representing Western Province at Provincials and at Nationals, as well as representing South Africa at the World Body Building Championships in Bordeaux, France during November 2017.
Currently residing in Kuils River, I am actively involved in the development and upliftment of my community in terms of health and fitness and I host a weekly dance fitness class for all ages.
The reason for my involvement and choice of sport was clear at the onset. I identify one hundred percent with the Natural body building association's objected that we need a sport that was drug-free when strength training and body building was adjudicated and tested, especially in the true spirit of athletism.
In preparation for the upcoming competitions, I am focusing on my personal intensive strength training.
