The IDEA AUCTION: Raising funds for social entrepreneurs

Personal message

On the 5th of September 2019, Oribi Village launched its' third incubation program: The Sustainable Tourism Incubation. 10 social entrepreneurs gathered together for the first time, for what was about to be an exciting 4-month program.

Each entrepreneur was carefully selected by our team and tourism experts based on the feasibility of their business idea, their social impact on their surrounding community and need for skills.

Our team has been overwhelmed at the amount of growth, grit and dedication displayed by each entrepreneur during these 4 months. Adapting their business concepts to the steady advice of their mentors, learning to identify and target their customer base and forming partnerships and collaborations that allow them to build and scale up their business.

The entrepreneurs have exceeded our expectations when it comes to grappling the business skills and advice given - however, skills alone are not enough. Many of them need seed capital to either get themselves off the ground, or scale-up their businesses. As Oribi Village is a non-profit organization - we are unable to support our budding change-makers. But we want to use our network, and your passion to see a change to make a difference in at least one of the entrepreneurs' lives.

The entrepreneurs that we are working with are;

  1. Khanya Fusa, Indibano Ekasi
  2. Khadim Diajna, Khadim’s Coffee Shop
  3. Tasneem Jhetam & Amy Bosworth, Third Space
  4. Tozamile Mnapu, Tozart's and Tourism Services
  5. Soraya De Brunys, Bo Kaap Tours with a difference
  6. Asekho Mjojeli, Asemjey's coffee etc
  7. Soraya Booley, Bo Kaap Guest House
  8. Dimpho Thepa, The Shoe Box
  9. Zuki Matama, Zuki Massage and Body Care
  10. Sharon Nqenqa, Nourish

On the 23rd of January, Oribi Village, in collaboration with Travel Massive, will be hosting the closing event for this amazing cohort we have had the honor of supporting. This event will be split into two sections; the graduation ceremony and the idea auction.

Graduation Ceremony

Each entrepreneur will be given a certification for completing the course, which has equipped them with the basic business skills to run a business.

Idea Auction

This will be an opportunity for the entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to you, the public. You get to become an investor in your own rite, with the ability to vote. In a market sort of setting, each entrepreneur will have a stall to pitch their idea to the public - the public will use the tokens issued to vote for the idea they believe should win the prize. The premise is for the entrepreneur is to 'sell' their business idea. At the end of the hour, the votes will be tallied, and the most votes will walk away with the R5 000 as well as further consultation from a business consultant to ensure the funds are invested correctly.

Tipping point

At the idea auction, the entrepreneur that has received the highest votes from the attendees at the event will walk away with the R5 000

Dream Goal

Any funds above the R5 000 raised will be apportioned between the second and third prize winner. Ideally, 2nd place would get R3 000 and 3rd place: R2 000.

Any donation is sure to make a difference in the lives of the entrepreneurs, who have been brave and resilient enough to face the harsh challenges of entrepreneurship in the South African economy.
