Ghent Mission 2020

Personal message

Jamie-Leigh and Shaun Kinmont

Sponsoring Young Adults to go on a gospel mission trip to Ghent, Belgium. We want to be a part of establishing a church there by reaching the local highly Atheistic student generation with the gospel. This region has high rates of recorded depression & suicide despite a flourishing economy. We aim to bring them support, hope and truth.

You may be wondering why our church has chosen this exact city and why it is necessary for a group of South Africans to traverse to Europe for ten days??

To start off, it is worth stating that as believers, we have been called to "go make disciples of every nation." [Mat 28:19]. This includes local outreach programs (We are very aware of the need in our immediate surroundings), but also not neglecting the call to reach far-out nations who are starving for the gospel, even though their bellies may be full.
In 2018, a small team from the Every Nation church in Southdowns went to Europe to scout and possibly assist the the Every Nation church in Ghent. A young couple were led to start the church there a few years ago and continue to seek growth. Ghent's society is Atheistic by majority. There is a high concentration of academic centers and subsequently a large student population.

Currently, most individuals living there will complete their existence without ever having heard of the Truth of the Gospel. Some it seems, have had negative experiences with strict religious sects and others have grown up in third/fourth generation Atheistic homes.  Why, then would they ever consider a loving God? Why would they challenge what they've been taught to believe about science and evolution?... Unless someone steps out to present this Truth in a loving and evidence-based way.

During the two outreaches in March and Oct this year, it was reported that the  majority of students in Ghent have never breached the topic of God with anyone openly and honestly, nor ever had someone offere to pray with them! The only reference they have to religion is historical facts about Christianity and Catholicism - which have been far from inviting or reasonable and even further from loving and uplifting.

In South Africa we have the privilege of experiencing a culture impacted by the revival of the Christian church. Most individuals will reach a crossroads where they have an informed choice of whether or not to accept Jesus into their lives. There is still much work to be done and the local churches are claiming ground for the kingdom in wonderful ways. Let's keep it up fellow South Africans!

As Every Nation Southdowns we have been tasked to bring Truth into this generation living in Ghent. To at least afford them the opportunity to hear about the true gospel. We are under-going training on how to answer those tough questions often asked by atheists and are studying historical evidence for Our Faith to challenge pre-concieved beliefs in evolution and scientific exclusion of God.

We will be spending our time on the campuses engaging students with the gospel and laying Biblical foundations so we can welcome them into the local church, so they can be continually discipled.
The call is strong in our hearts to go into this harvest field to strengthen the local church there, impacting the city of Ghent and reaching further into Europe as discipleship grows and multiplies!

Belgium has a stable economy and most live above the breadline, but still the depression and suicide rates are skyrocketing. These people are starving for purpose and hope. We trust that God will impact their society with Truth and Hope as we are answer to the call.

Please consider partnering with us in prayer and finances if you want to be a part of our mission. The financial costs of reaching Europe may deter many from attempting it, but we hope to forge on and are trusting for provision.
