Jamila's Journey

Personal message

Our daughter, Jamila Bengaliwalla, is a little angel who is 4 and a half years old. She has been diagnosed with a fatal genetic disease known commonly as Batten's Disease. As of now, Jamila is the only child in Botswana diagnosed with Batten's disease (CLN2).

Batten's disease is a rare group of nervous systems disorders caused by the build up of fatty substances in the cells of the brain, central nervous system and retina of the eye. The current estimated life expectancy of a child with Batten's Disease is between 6 - 12 years old.

Over time, Jamila will lose her ability to speak, her motor functions and her eye sight, to name just a few.

Due to Jamila's specific circumstances, she now requires access to various specialised therapies (such as physio, occupational, speech), treatments (specific diet, dietary supplements, medication) and equipment (a specialised wheelchair, medical bed, bathing equipment). In addition, regular trips to South Africa are needed as her Paediatric Neurologist is based there.

There are two aims for this campaign. Firstly, to provide Jamila with the most comfortable life. Secondly, we would like to raise awareness about Batten's disease, as only through greater awareness will more research be done to hopefully find a treatment or a cure.

We would like to thank you in advance for any donations made. Even if you are unable to help financially, please help us share our campaign to spread awareness of Batten's Disease.

As a last note, the campaign is supported by a website based in South Africa, and for this reason the total goal for this campaign will reflect in South African Rands (100,000.00) which is approximately US Dollar (10,000.00). Funds raised will be transferred into the beneficiary's bank account.
