Relief for a widow

Personal message

Our story:

In June 2016, a day before Father's day, we rushed my dad to the hospital as it had been three days since he was able to hold down a meal. What we thought might have been a really bad stomach bug ended up being our worst nightmare. After being transferred from Sandton Clinic to the Donald Gordon Medical Centre we were truly worried. That Wednesday he went under the knife, the procedure took much longer than anticipated. We found ourselves sitting across from the Surgeon (still in her scrubs) with incredibly sad news. He had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The following three months were a living hell as we watched our father and husband shrink into a shadow of his former self. He passed on the 3rd of September 2016. To make matters worse, he did not leave any life insurance or even a pension for my mom. The bond was not insured and a family friend helped us to pay off the last bit owed (R26000) which we are incredibly thankful for.

My mom Jenny Jones is now 59 years and is struggling to find work to keep up with the monthly overheads of the house. She has a heart condition (enlarged heart) which she is on chronic medication for. The condition is far worse and more complicated than my sister and I had originally realized. She is therefore unable to work normal work hours due to this condition which makes it even harder to find her work. There was the obvious option to sell the home of which a number of people suggested, however after chatting to a market specialist and some friends in real estate we have decided to try our best to keep the home. With the market being a buyers market it would be unwise to sell as the current economy condition and trajectory would only provide around  3-5 years living budget. This would only leave her in a worse situation as she would then be of retirement age and have nothing.

  So what now?:

The Spargo family,(longtime family friends) have offered their service and advice to help renovate the double garage at my moms home into a studio apartment in order to bring in passive income for my mom. This would then allow my mom to find a menial half day job that will not put her health at risk. Nick Spargo has created a detailed ballpark budget for what is needed, around R83479.

  How can you help?:

We are in need of any financial aid and help from any electricians, plumbers and builders who would be willing to help and donate services. Please keep us in your prayers as we navigate through all of these logistics, my moms health and job situation. Any help would be appreciated more than you could ever know. Thank you so much for your time.
