Joanita Smit

Personal message

Good day to all.

My name is Joanita Smit. I am a 46-year-old woman living in Boksburg Gauteng.

My mission in life is to raise awareness about mental health and GBV and, in the process, educate the community about it to break the stigma.

In my early teenage years, I  was gang-raped by 4 men, and at that stage, I was only 16 years old. I never reached out for any help due to the fear of being told "it's your fault." It was only later on in my adult life that I suffered the consequences.

Since the age of 18, my personal journey with mental health started. I struggled with depression but in those years, it was a topic that was not spoken about. At the age of 24, I tried to take my own life by overdosing on depression medication. Luckily, I was found in time and lived to share my story with the world.

Finally, in 2008, my path crossed with an amazing psychiatrist, and I was diagnosed with all the correct disorders that are being treated successfully today. I do suffer from Bi-Polar Disorder 2, Anxiety Disorder, Insomnia, PTSD, OCD and High EQ. Through therapy and the use of medication, I am living a normal life just like everyone else. It was during this process that I discovered how uneducated people are about mental health. I made a promise to myself to be an advocate for all the people suffering and all the victims by breaking this stigma.

I was lucky to fulfil one of my other passions in life for 16 years. I was given the opportunity to open my own Pre-Primary school in 2005 and absolutely loved every moment of teaching young children. And then COVID hit South Africa. On the 15th of March 2020, all ECD centres were closed until August 2020. For this reason, my business was not generating any money, and I had to close the doors.

I decided to stay positive and did a short course in counselling to help people with their mental health and due to my experience also people that were sexually abused. Due to the economic and psychological impact that the pandemic had on South Africans, I decided to provide my counselling pro-bono. And thanks to technology, all these sessions were done over WhatsApp, which gave me the means of helping people all over South Africa.

I since realized that there is an extremely high demand for therapists in South Africa. This is the reason why I decided to broaden my education by qualifying as an advanced therapist. I will then be able to provide the following therapy; Mental Health Disorders, Phobias, Eating Disorders, Youth Counseling, GBV, All types of abuse, Sexuality, Family Therapy, Substance abuse, Reminiscence, Bereavement and many more.

I will continue my pro-bono work at the old age homes, places of safety for abandoned and abused children and women, raped clinics, and the 27 people currently receiving therapy.

I managed to raise some of the money needed for my tuition fee and laptop, but unfortunately, there is still an outstanding amount. This is now holding me back from starting my course.

Please help me change the lives of the people in South Africa through my studies and my mental awareness campaign. Smitten Love to educate society and raise awareness about mental health.

Thank you for your support in advance. I will forever be grateful to those who donate and will dedicate my work to each and every one.
