Joburg Ballet NPC Fundraiser

Joburg Ballet NPC Fundraiser

Personal message

In the face of a global pandemic and financial uncertainty, Joburg Ballet could have followed the path of so many other companies that faced closure but instead, we have undertaken to lift our heads high and to walk tall through the miasma of fear and start acknowledging that Covid-19 has affected everyone.

Joburg Ballet has been fortunate through this time in the assistance given by the City of Johannesburg and other sponsors, donations and finding work through various corporate performances and we would be amiss not to help those in need.

Joburg Ballet is invested in the art of classical ballet as much as it is in the future of this country. Therefore, teaming up with Teddy Bear Clinic for abused children made perfect sense, and a beautiful relationship was born.

Joburg Ballet, through its BackaBuddy page, has so far been able to purchase stationery packs for children at the Teddy Bear Clinic. We not only commend the amazing work that the @teddybearclinic is doing, but we have undertaken to lend a helping hand throughout 2021.

We would be remiss not to thank our pets and fur-babies for putting up with us during lockdown. Not all are lucky enough to be able have pets, just as some animals are not lucky enough to have a loving and safe environment. We have now paired with Kitty and Puppy Haven to help with the steep bills in keeping animals sheltered, fed and medically cared for.

From the funds raised through our BackaBuddy page to date, Joburg Ballet has purchased 20 packs of stationary for children, contributed R1 000 worth of treats and tick and flea powder to @kitpuphaven, and made a total cash donation of over R14 000 split between both charities. We care for all life and wish to do our part, particularly in helping those without a voice in an ongoing manner.

With your support, Joburg Ballet can dance with confidence into a challenging future, bringing the magic of dance back to our communities, our city and our country.

Joburg Ballet – resident in the heart of Jozi at the Joburg Theatre – is home to thirty full-time professional ballet dancers. A non-profit organization driven by a board of Directors predominantly made up of women, Joburg Ballet is one of only two ballet companies in South Africa.

The company presents three major seasons annually at the Joburg Theatre and a further season at the Teatro at Montecasino. Our commitment to making ballet more accessible, open and inclusive sees us touring the country, bringing ballet to areas that seldom experience the performing arts and most importantly, through our charitable school performances, making the world a brighter place for children in poorer communities.

We also provide training to young students through the Joburg Ballet Academy and Joburg Ballet School and offer a comprehensive programme of community-based development and outreach work at our Satellite Schools in Alexandra, Soweto and Braamfontein, with emphasis on historically disadvantaged communities.

But the ballet world has been crippled by the coronavirus pandemic. With an already tight budget and our first major season of 2020 being cut short, Joburg Ballet has tried to stay afloat for the last six months with absolutely no ability to make an income from the box office. Due to COVID-19 regulations, our dancers have had to keep up their training at home. Joburg Ballet's planned productions for 2020 have been thwarted, our community-based development programme has been virtually non-existent, and with the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, planning for future performances has been challenging.

We are turning to you – our audience and supporters – to please help us get back on our toes. The funds donated are going to be used to launch several fundraising initiatives, with a portion of the funds raised being donated to The Teddy Bear Clinic for abused children and Kitty and Puppy Haven.

We are appealing for your support in these uncertain times. We understand the pandemic has caused financial strain on everyone but even the smallest donation will help to keep Joburg Ballet alive, well and dancing.

With your support, Joburg Ballet can dance with confidence into a challenging future, bringing the magic of dance back to our Communities, our City and our Country.
