Johan Roos World Transplant Games

Personal message

My name is Johan Roos. I am 80 years old and received a heart transplant 19 years ago at Groote Schuur Hospital.

I have been selected to represent South Africa at the World Transplant Games to be held in Newcastle, United Kingdom, in August 2019.I am probably the first 80-year old transplant patient in the world to compete in these games. It is of great significance for South Africa where the first heart transplant was done as well as for medical science.

I will be competing in Discus, Javelin, Shot Put, Throw Ball and Pétanque (a game similar to bouls).

I am a State Pensioner and dependent on donations to bear the costs involved.

*Funds will go directly to the South African Transplant Sports Association*
