Cycling For Those Who Can't

Personal message

My name is Johannes Meintjes and I live in Northern Kwa-zulu Natal in South Africa.
My dream is to participate in the ABSA Cape Epic Mountainbike Race in 2020. This is an event that takes place in the Western Cape of South Africa over a period of 8 days with over 16000 meters of ascent.

In 2016 I had a very bad bicycle crash during the Cape Cycle Tour and ended up spending 3 days in hospital. It made my realise how quickly things could go wrong and how fragile the human body is. I was very lucky to escape serious spinal injury as this accident happened at speed.
I decided that I wanted to combine my dream of cycling the Epic with raising funds for a charity that is close to my heart. I chose the Quadpara (quadroplegic and paraplegic) Association of South Africa. The funds raised will specifically be applied for skills development in the quadruplegic and paraplegic community.

The funds will be used for various skills training for paraplegic and quadroplegic members who require assistance to function in an able bodied environment.

There is not enough funds available to assist with skills training. Skills enable the qudro- and paraplegic to be able to function in a very difficult able bodied environment. It improves the sense of self worthiness hugely if these people can earn an income by doing something that is of value to another party.
