Shongweni Vendor's Cancer Treatment

Shongweni Vendor's Cancer Treatment

Personal message

John Richards - a pensioner who lives near Hillcrest; whose only income came from selling wooden toys at the Shongweni Market, which has been closed due to the COVID19 lockdown.

Discovery Medical Aid needs to answer for the way they treat long-term members. A community doctor asked me formy help - a patient had come to his clinic with what appears to be an aggressive cancerous tumour, and was unable to receive treatment because, after paying his premiums for 25 years, he had defaulted on the last two months' payment. He and his wife are vendors at the Shongweni Market, and they have had no income during lockdown. I appealed to Discovery and was told that they were sympathetic but not able to authorise treatment while the R7 332 was outstanding for the past two months.

After paying premiums for TWENTY-FIVE YEARS.

I am just gutted, thinking about the thousands of others this policy will affect- how can there be no payment holidays for medical aid members under these circumstances?

We need to support local small businesses, and local tourist attractions so that they don't disappear during this crisis.

We managed to raise the first R10 000 which covered the outstanding medical aid payments, but I have just spoken to his wife and there are co-payments and monthly premiums that she cannot afford to pay for. She is going to take him to a government hospital, but her family has no money for transporting him there, or paying for incidental expenses.

I hope that this family will receive the financial support they didn't get from their medical aid, and that this heightens community awareness about the dire straits that many of our neighbours find themselves in, and how tenuous all of our positions are when at the mercy of private medical aids and their policy makers.

We are hoping to raise enough funding to revive Mr Richards' medical aid so that he can be treated close to home where he has easy access for the radiation that he needs to have as an out patient after having the tumour removed, and to any pain/ antiemetics/ antibiotic medications that might be needed.
