Road to Olympics

Personal message

My name is Jon-antohein Phillips, I am 19 years old. I have been doing weightlifting for 7 years. Currently, I am the South African Junior champion and I hold 6 South African records (3 in junior and 3 in senior.  It has become my passion and a sport I have fallen in love with because of its complexities.

As a South African weightlifter, I am often told to raise my own funds to compete internationally and represent my country. My mother is a single mom providing for me and my two sisters and we live in an area that is seen as dangerous because of the gangs and the guns, so she is not able to support me with my dream to compete in the 2024 Parys Olympics. I have been doing weightlifting for 7 years and it has become my life, as I am in the gym training every single day, working towards my goals and trying to better myself in every aspect. I love helping others and inspiring my peers and people who follow me to continue working hard and to do what makes them happy because I'm doing what I love and I believe it will open doors for me. My short term goal is to compete in Mauritius and various other countries in 2020.

Competing in these international competitions will give me the necessary experience and skills I need on the road to achieving my dream to compete in the 2024 Parys Olympics. It will also show the younger children that live in my community that anything is possible no matter where you come from, you just have to put in the work.

I am aiming to compete in 4 international competitions in 2020. The combined cost for flights to the four countries will cost around R50000, food and accommodation to each competition is between R10000 - R15000, so it adds up to about R45000 and the last R5000 would be used for me to get the necessary clothes needed for that trip (jackets, training attire, etc.) and pocket money.

Funds raised will be transferred into my bank account.
