Help Us Get Help For Katie

Personal message

Katie was suddenly diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was 3 years old, Kenton-On-Sea, Eastern Cape.

Hi, I’m Bianca – An epileptic who underwent brain surgery at the age of 10 and was cleared for 19 years, I have been able to live my life to its full potential, and I want to give Katie the opportunity to do this too.

I have set up this page to help with the expenses of Katie as she will be going to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town for tests to try and find the reason for all her seizures and a possible cure for her Epilepsy. She will need 24-hour EEG’s and more, and her family are in dire need of assistance to cover the day-to-day expenses of being there for her as they are unable to afford this in full due to Katie’s mom having to become a full-time carer to Katie because of her seizures.

Please read the below written by her mother, Kristie.
“Katie was suddenly diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was 3 years old. This was something I never thought would happen. I did not want to believe it at first.
We rushed Katie to our nearest hospital to find out what was going on. They confirmed that she is having seizures and that tests would need to be done to find out what is causing it.
Katie was admitted into George Provincial Hospital just after 12am on Sunday night in April 2019.
We stayed just over a week in the hospital while they did numerous tests on her. We were both so scared. I did not know what was going to happen to my beautiful baby girl.
The EEG showed abnormal activity going on in her brain. But no one could tell me why she is having up to 15 seizures a day.   They gave her medication to help stop the seizures. The medication has calmed the seizures down, but she’s still having multiple seizures a day.
We have been to numerous check-ups with doctors over the 3 years, trying, hoping and praying for answers.

In August, Katie had a setback, and she could not walk properly. She struggles to communicate with us. She cannot eat by herself or drink by herself anymore. She also loses control of her bladder. We took her to the Dr, and they changed her medicine dosage to see if that would help. But nothing worked.”

They have set a target of R10 000 to get them through the upcoming weeks in Cape Town (which could possibly increase should they release they need to stay longer), and they have set up an account for Katie herself where all funds will be deposited into. If you would like to assist this family and assist Katie in making a future possible for her, please donate on this page.

I will continue to update this page as I receive news from Katie’s mom.
